INNOVATING GRADE 5 MATHEMATICS TEACHING – INTEGRATING ENGLISH, STEM AND STEAM
Following the school’s professional development plan, the Grade 5 teaching team organized a professional teaching session on “Innovating Grade 5 Mathematics Teaching Methods to Develop Students’ Qualities and Competencies.” The lesson was designed with an integrated approach, in which English was incorporated into the warm-up activity, STEM activities were implemented during the exploration of new knowledge, and STEAM was applied in the practice and application activities.
Right from the beginning of the lesson, the classroom atmosphere became lively and exciting with the cheerful song “Hello, Hello. How are you?”, followed by natural and engaging English questions and answers between the teacher and students.
During the exploration of new knowledge, the teacher organized learning tasks following a STEM-oriented approach. Students worked in groups to observe, practice, calculate, discuss, and find solutions to real-life problems. Through these hands-on activities, students not only gained mathematical knowledge but also developed their critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
In particular, during the application activity, the STEAM approach was clearly demonstrated as students applied their mathematical knowledge to complete a call-and-response math rap. Through this activity, Mathematics was no longer seen as dry or difficult. Instead, it became a practical tool that helped students solve meaningful and engaging tasks connected to real life.
Through this professional teaching session, the teachers in the Grade 5 team had an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences in designing learning activities that integrate English, STEM, and STEAM into Mathematics lessons. At the same time, they explored suitable ways of organizing activities according to the characteristics and learning needs of Grade 5 students.
The lesson created a positive, active, and creative learning environment, allowing students to “learn through experience, learn to apply, and learn to create.” This is also a practical approach to improving the quality of teaching and learning while enhancing students’ English language proficiency and problem-solving skills in the context of modern education.
